It all started with Sidney Crosbys father Troy who gave him a little hockey stick at the age of 2! With this stick Sidney played around and “practiced” daily in the basement of their house. Allthough he was just 2 years old he already started loving playing with the little stick and a tennis ball.

I personally think this gave him a big advantage to many other three year-olds when he finally started playing for a little hockey club in Halifax, Nova Scotia, as he had already learned the basics of stick-handling. Which lead to him to outplaying five-six years-old kids while himself being just three.

Sidney would everyday on the winter season go down to the local hockey-rink and just play even if it wasn’t for a team, he just couldn’t be away from hockey! And this was when he was just around five years-old!

When joining teams he really outshine everyone he faced, which encouraged both him and parents to just get more involved in the game of hockey. This lead him to play with 17 year-olds while himself just being 14 (!).

At just the age of 15, Sidney Crosby tried to enter the QMJHL, but was denied because of his young age. He had to wait one year. So at 16 he was picked up by hockey team Rimouski Oceanic, where he had a remarkable season opener, getting 8 points on the first game! He continued to dominate the league and won the MVP (most valuble player) Trophy easily. At 17 he played one more year for the same team, and to no ones suprise he was even better this season getting 168 points compared to 135 in his first year.

After this success in QMJHL, Sidney Crosby was an obvious number one choice for the NHL draft in the summer of 2005. Pittsburgh Penguins won the draft-lottery, which meant that was the team Sidney Crosby would play for. And as you probably know Sidney Crosby had a phenomenal first season getting 104 points! And his second year looks like to be another great year for him, in just 19 games so far he has 30 points!

Looking back on how he got from being just a kid to where he is today, I think the biggest factor of him being so successful was his love for the game at such an early age. This really got him a head start to other kids to improve and just get confidence and enjoy the game even at that early age. Then another huge factor was his parents, who really supported him while growing up, he mother Tina even worked extra shifts just for money to pay Sidney’s equipment.
